RICHMOND ADDICTION SERVICES

Aging Well Program

We offer outreach counselling and case management to seniors at home. We work very closely with other professionals in the community to develop collaborative programs to keep our seniors healthy.

Sometimes it is the senior who is having a problem with their use of alcohol or drugs, sometimes the senior has a family member who has a problem. We provide service to both the senior and their family.

There is a support group for current or former clients who have substance use challenges.

We also provide community education to the Richmond community about the older adults’ use of alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Some examples are a theatre troupe in which seniors are recruited, educated about a health issue, write and produce short educative scripts for other seniors. This has also evolved into a stand alone theatre for seniors group.

We have a South Asian project which was designed by a group of senior South Asian men. They have produced a brochure in Punjabi and designed a program in which we train volunteers to model responsible drinking within their community and at social events.

We are presently designing a Mentor program in which client “graduates” of our Aging Well program are linked to new clients with the purpose of connecting them back to the community.
